ADAS Calibration — Why is it Important?

The front-facing camera, which is mounted behind the windshield and is one of the key components of ADAS, must be in good working order for ADAS to function properly.

The ADAS won’t be able to function as intended without confirmation that the camera is operating properly, which can pose a significant safety risk. These sensors can lose their accuracy with little effort.

To take the necessary action, such as stopping the car, when you are in immediate danger, you need to be warned as soon as possible. However, if the ADAS isn’t functioning correctly, the signals and alerts may be delayed, making it difficult for you to stop the car in time. Therefore, calibrating the windshield is crucial.

Not just the driver is in danger in this situation. If your ADAS is malfunctioning, other drivers or your passengers may also be in danger.

What Are The Common Features of ADAS?

Although ADAS technology may appear to be a recent development, automakers have been using it for years. Anti-lock braking systems, the first ADAS feature, debuted in 1950. Since then, dozens of additional safety features have been added to both entry-level and high-end car models.

The following are a few of the most common ADAS features that your car might have:

  • Parking assistance
  • Pedestrian detection
  • Traction control
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Lane departure warning
  • Back-up cameras
  • Tire pressure monitoring
  • Traffic sign recognition

Many of the ADAS features mentioned above, though not all of them, rely on cameras and sensors attached to your car’s windshield. Other sensors in your car are used by others, but for all of those cameras and sensors to function properly, they need to be placed precisely.

When Should Auto Glass Repairs Include ADAS Calibration?

In general, calibrations are needed for glass repairs that involve moving, adjusting, or replacing the windshield or side mirrors. Therefore, it is very likely that ADAS calibration procedures will need to be included in all windshield and glass mirror repairs for vehicles equipped with the technology. Contact Omni Auto Glass for more information about ADAS calibration!
